Identity Engineering vs. Classical Identity Theories
Locke, Hume, Erikson: and the leap to a physics-informed, designable geometry of self.
Every serious framework for identity in the AI era must first reckon with its philosophical predecessors. John Locke gave us consciousness as the thread of personal identity. David Hume dissolved the self into a bundle of perceptions. Erik Erikson framed identity as a lifelong psychosocial achievement forged in crisis.
These maps are powerful. They are also insufficient for a world in which identity is no longer merely discovered or developed; it can be deliberately engineered.
Identity Engineering begins where classical theories end: with the recognition that identity is a geometric system whose parameters (Mass, Curvature, Gravitation, and the Identity Stem) can be observed, stressed, and intentionally reshaped to maximize causal entropy: the openness of future possible histories.
John Locke: Consciousness Continuity as Proto-Trajectory
Locke’s Essay Concerning Human Understanding (1689) rejects innate ideas. The mind at birth is a tabula rasa. All knowledge derives from sensation (external) and reflection (internal operations of the mind).
His theory of personal identity (Book II, Chapter 27) is forensic: a Person is a thinking, intelligent being that can consider itself as itself, the same thinking thing in different times and places. Personal identity consists in the sameness of consciousness, primarily sustained by memory, the capacity to extend consciousness backward to past actions and thoughts.
The Prince and the Cobbler thought experiment remains decisive: if the consciousness of a prince enters the body of a cobbler, the Person remains the prince, accountable for princely deeds, even though the Man (biological organism) is now the cobbler. Identity tracks consciousness, not substance.
Differentiation: Locke’s model is retrospective and memory-dependent. It explains accountability but offers no mechanism for actively opening new degrees of freedom. Identity Engineering adds the Vision Gradient (the prospective force that curves possibility space forward) and treats consciousness continuity as the baseline state differential that can be augmented through Questions as Probes and owned acts that increase Mass.
David Hume: The Bundle Without a Stem
In A Treatise of Human Nature, Hume performs a radical empiricist reduction. When he looks inward, he finds only a bundle or collection of different perceptions (impressions and ideas) in perpetual flux. There is no simple, enduring self or substance.
Personal identity is a fiction of the imagination, constructed from relations of resemblance, contiguity, and causation among perceptions. The self is nothing but a “bundle or collection of different perceptions, which succeed each other with an inconceivable rapidity, and are in a perpetual flux and movement.”
IE contrast: Hume correctly diagnoses the absence of a Cartesian substantial self. But where he stops at dissolution, Identity Engineering introduces the Identity Stem as an engineered, high-coherence axis that can be deliberately strengthened. The bundle is real; the Stem is the designed structure that gives the bundle direction, resistance to dispersion, and gravitational pull. Hume describes the problem of fragmentation; we treat fragmentation as a starting geometry that can be recentered and curved.
Erik Erikson: Identity as Developmental Achievement
Erikson’s psychosocial stages place identity formation at the center of the adolescent crisis: Identity vs. Role Confusion. Identity here is a sense of sameness and continuity, achieved through exploration and commitment. Later extensions (Marcia’s identity statuses) map the space between diffusion, foreclosure, moratorium, and achievement.
Identity is forged in social context, through crises that demand resolution. It is both personal and cultural.
IE differentiation: Erikson maps the developmental terrain and the risk of incoherence. Yet the model remains largely descriptive and stage-bound. It does not provide engineering primitives for intentionally increasing the Mass of commitments, introducing deliberate Curvature through vision work, or using precise Questions as Probes to accelerate movement from diffusion toward architected identity. Identity Engineering treats the Eriksonian crisis not as a once-in-a-lifetime event but as a recurring design surface that can be entered with greater agency and geometric awareness.
From Mapping to Engineering
Classical theories excel at diagnosis and retrospective coherence. They chart how identity has been constituted. Identity Engineering asks how identity can be constituted, and then gives the architect tools to do so with precision.

- 02Bundle → Structured Field: Hume’s flux is accepted, but we add designed Mass and Gravitation so the field does not dissipate.
- 03Stage → Controllable Curvature: Erikson’s crises become opportunities for deliberate introduction of Vision Gradient curvature.
The result is not another philosophical map. It is an identity framework: one that integrates the forensic accountability of Locke, the anti-substantial clarity of Hume, and the developmental honesty of Erikson, while adding the missing forward vector: conscious, physics-informed design in service of greater causal entropy.
