Consciousness Continuity as Proto-Trajectory

Locke is the classical British empiricist. In the Essay Concerning Human Understanding (1689) he argues against the rationalists who postulated innate ideas.

• Tabula rasa: the mind at birth is a blank slate. All ideas come from experience.
• Two sources of ideas: sensation (external world) and reflection (internal operations: thinking, doubting, willing, perceiving).

Philosophy here is “research in the mind”: conceptual analysis and thought experiments. Identity Engineering is related in spirit: conceptual modeling with geometric primitives, inspired by empirical physics, still building toward operational and empirical tests.

Locke sharply distinguishes between Man (biological organism, bodily continuity) and Person (thinking, intelligent being with reason and reflection that can consider itself as itself).

Locke presents personal identity as grounded in the continuity of consciousness over time, with memory functioning as a key way consciousness extends backward to past actions and thoughts. See Book II, Chapter 27 (“Of Identity and Diversity”).

Methodological caution: Locke is often read as a pure memory theorist, but contemporary scholarship treats this as debated. The chapter itself is centered on consciousness and forensic concernment, while the exact memory relation remains interpretively contested.

The Prince and the Cobbler thought experiment: the consciousness of a prince enters the body of a cobbler. The Person remains the prince, accountable for princely deeds, even though the Man is now the cobbler. Identity tracks consciousness, not substance (body or soul).

Person is a forensic term: it concerns accountability, responsibility, reward and punishment.

• Sameness-as-trajectory: Locke offers a key precursor: identity as continuity across time rather than static substance. Identity Engineering extends this with a forward component (Vision Gradient) and geometric dynamics (a stable axis around which continuity can rotate and curve).
• State differential: corresponds to the backward extension of consciousness (memory as coherence maintenance).
• Identity Stem: the inner core from which conscious continuity derives stability (in Locke, implicitly the “same self” that reflects).
• Forensic dimension: fits the Architect level and Dual Mission (responsibility also in substrate-free contexts).

Differentiation: Locke is often interpreted as predominantly retrospective, centered on consciousness continuity and memory-linked concernment. Identity Engineering additionally emphasizes prospective direction and intervention: Vision Gradient plus conscious design of geometry. Locke frames accountability; the framework adds explicit design and method.

Empirie gap: Locke’s account is largely developed through conceptual analysis and thought experiments.
