Self-Overcoming as Causal Entropy Maximization

Nietzsche is the philosopher of Werden (becoming) and active self-formation. In Thus Spoke Zarathustra (1883-85) and surrounding works he rejects static substance or soul theories: the human is not a fixed essence but something that must continuously overcome itself.

• „Werde, der du bist" (from The Gay Science §270 and as the subtitle of Ecce Homo): the central imperative. Identity is not a found state but a continuous act of affirmation and creation. Nietzsche takes the phrase from Pindar and reframes it as a forward-directed task.
• Self-overcoming: the human is a bridge, not an endpoint. In Zarathustra, Nietzsche describes man as something that must be overcome toward a higher type who creates new values and opens new possibility spaces.
• The last human vs. the sovereign individual: critique of herd-based, low-agency identity (adaptation, ressentiment) in favor of the one who authors their own values. The sovereign individual appears in On the Genealogy of Morality, Essay II §2 as the "ripest fruit" of self-cultivation: the person who has mastered themselves to the point of being genuinely able to make and keep promises, autonomous and no longer merely subject to custom.

Will to power: the fundamental affirmative driving force behind all becoming. Not mere domination, but creative expansion of possibilities and influence. Nietzsche develops this across Beyond Good and Evil and Zarathustra as the organizing principle of life itself.

Eternal recurrence: one of Nietzsche's central thought experiments. If you had to live your life again, in every detail, infinitely many times, could you affirm it? The test is for life-affirmation: only a life lived with full intensity and without ressentiment can be willed to recur. See The Gay Science §341 ("The greatest weight") and Zarathustra, "On the Vision and the Riddle." The IE reading below interprets this as a driver toward open causal futures; that framing is Identity Engineering's, not Nietzsche's own.

The sovereign individual is the one who sets their own values and thereby takes full responsibility for their own identity geometry · what IE calls the forensic and architect level.

• Gravitation and Curvature: the will to power, read through IE, functions as the attractive force of a coherent, high-mass vision that curves the reachable region of configuration space around it.
• Causal Entropic Forces: Nietzsche's drive toward maximal becoming is a philosophical precursor to what Wissner-Gross models physically: systems that actively maximize their future causal options. IE reads the will to power as existential and ethical depth added to that principle: not only intelligence, but affirmative life with maximal agency. This mapping is IE's own.
• Identity Stem: the hard, cultivable core of the self from which all further structures grow and curve. In IE, one must first strengthen this stem in order to have something worth overcoming.
• Executor to Author to Architect arc: Nietzsche describes the ascent from mere execution (the last human, low-mass, reactive) through authoring one's own values to becoming the architect of new identity geometries and value systems. IE maps this arc directly onto its three agency levels.

Differentiation from Locke: Locke offers retrospective continuity of consciousness (memory-based, forensic accountability). Nietzsche offers prospective overcoming and affirmation (vitalistic, forward-directed). Together they give a fuller picture: stable axis (Stem) plus dynamic expansive force.

Identity Engineering needs both poles: the stability of the axis and the driving force of expansion toward open causal histories.
