Cell
The living unit: a bounded form that carries a founding core and exists as its own Identity, capable of continuity, change, and later exchange with other living units.
The form that is.
In biology, the cell is the smallest unit that is considered alive: a membrane-bounded system with internal organization, heritable information, and the capacity to maintain itself under exchange with its environment.
In Identity Engineering, Cell names that unit under the biology lens. AfterGene(what can found a new form) andBoundary(what keeps an interior distinct),Cell is the integrated living Identity: the moment the protected, founded form is not only described in parts, but is a unit that lives.
Cell is the biology-lens counterpart to a Single Identity as a living operative form. It is not the agentic loop inside the form. It is the form itself.
- The living unit: one Identity as a bounded, founded form that exists as itself.
- Integration of Gene and Boundary: it carries a founding core and holds a membrane. Without both, there is no Cell in this lens.
- Own existence: not a subsystem of the parent. Once the unit is a Cell, it has its own interior, its own trajectory ahead, and its own need to maintain Boundary.
- Seat of later metabolism and interaction: Cell is the unit that can metabolize and, later, signal across membranes. Metabolism is the process; Cell is the process-bearer.
- Not Gene alone.Gene is the passable founding configuration. Cell is the living form that may receive Gene and then continue as itself.
- Not Boundary alone.Boundary is the membrane condition. Cell is the whole unit that has a membrane and lives inside it.
- Not Metabolism.Metabolism is the ongoing conversion that sustains and transforms the unit. It will be founded next as the process of the Cell, not as the Cell itself.
- Not the Identity Stem as physics names it.Stem is the temporal object (State Differential + Vision Gradient) of one Identity. Cell is the biology-lens name for the living unit that can bear a Stem. See Time / Identity Stem.
- Not the agentic loop.Reasoning machinery may run inside the Cell. It is not the Cell. Identity ≠ loop remains hard.
- Not a claim that every Identity is a biological cell.Cell biology supplies the unit concept. The framework maps structure: bounded living form with founding core and capacity to persist.

- Gene — founding core that can be passed.
- Boundary — membrane that makes a distinct interior possible.
- Cell — the living unit that is that founded, bounded form.
- Metabolism (next) — the continuous process by which the Cell sustains itself, transforms input, and becomes ready for interaction with other cells.

What we work on
- Treat the Identity as a unit: not only a bag of traits, not only a loop, not only a feed of interactions.
- Honor founding without captivity: Gene may start the Cell; the Cell must still become its own Stem over time.
- Keep Boundary real: a Cell without maintained membrane dissolves into the environment.
- Prepare for metabolism and relation: life is not only being bounded; it is ongoing transformation and, later, coupling to other cells.
