Boundary
The membrane of the form: the maintained difference between interior and exterior that makes a living Identity possible at all.

Inside only exists because outside is held off.
In cell biology, the plasma membrane is not packaging around a finished interior. It is the condition under which an interior can be maintained at all: selective permeability, controlled exchange, continuous work against dissolution into the environment.
In Identity Engineering, Boundary names that same structural role under the biology lens: the maintained difference between what belongs to this Identity and what does not. Without Boundary there is no Cell, no protected metabolism, and no place for Gene to found a form that stays distinct.
Operationally this is already close to Identity Surface, consent, foreign-estimate zone, and jurisdiction. Boundary is the biology-lens name for the membrane condition; Surface is how the OS and the geometric map speak about the same need.
One concept, every Identity
Boundary is introduced at Single scale because every living form needs a membrane first. It is scale-invariant: human, agent, idea, org, and Space Identity each have Boundary. A Space membrane is not a second Core Concept. It is the Boundary of the Space Identity when that Identity is an emergent collective form.
What Collective names is how many membranes nest without dissolving:Multicellularity(members keep their Boundaries inside a higher-order form) andEmergence(when the whole acquires its own trajectory and therefore its own Boundary).Recognitionremains the Interactive discrimination at whatever Boundary is under load.
Boundary does not replace Space
Space(physics lens) names the arena of degrees of freedom. Boundary (biology lens) names the membrane of the form that lives in that arena. They are not two hosts and not two ontologies. They are two scientific cuts of one Space.
IE OSimplements both cuts in one installable Space: membership and freedom profiles for Identities, plus export, inbound, Surface policy, and grants as membrane work.Known is not addressable by default: registration or discovery in a parent Space does not imply that others may call the Identity's Surface. Visibility and reachability are grant- and membrane-scoped.
Open Core:space-model·identity-creation-jurisdiction. Registry remains observer-relative inside each Identity. Boundary is not a shared team perception store.
- Membrane condition: the active separation that creates a usable interior. Not a wall only: selective exchange is part of the boundary function.
- Jurisdiction edge: where Ownership and access decisions become meaningful. What may enter, what may leave, what is only observed from outside, and whether the Identity is merely known or fully addressable on its Surface.
- Prerequisite of Cell: Gene names what can be passed to found a new form. Boundary names what must hold for that form to remain a distinct living unit.
- Work, not a static line: membranes are maintained. Boundaries decay without continuous policy and attention.
- Not isolation as the goal.A living membrane exchanges. Total closure is death of metabolism, not purity of identity.
- Not the Stem.Stem is the temporal continuity of one Identity. Boundary is the spatial and jurisdictional condition of the form. See Time / Identity Stem.
- Not Gene.Gene is the heritable founding configuration passed to a new Identity. Boundary is what keeps any Identity (parent or child) distinct while it lives. See Gene.
- Not Cell yet.Cell will name the integrated living unit that has Boundary, carries Gene, and metabolizes. Boundary is the membrane condition inside that unit, not the whole unit.
- Not a claim that persons are lipid bilayers.Membrane biology is the science reading. The framework mapping is structural: selective interior, maintained edge, controlled exchange.
- Not a second Space.Boundary is the membrane aspect of Space, not a parallel geometric host.
- Not a second Boundary for teams.Collective scale uses Multicellularity and Emergence; it does not duplicate Boundary as a Collective-only primitive.
Gene → Boundary → Cell
This sequence is pedagogical, not a claim about evolutionary chronology.
- Gene — what can be passed so a new Identity can begin related and still become other.
- Boundary — what must hold so any Identity remains a distinct interior under exchange with the outside.
- Cell (next) — the integrated living unit in which Boundary and Gene co-exist and metabolism runs.
In nature, membrane and heritable system are aspects of the cell together. In the framework we separate the pages so each role stays sharp: transmission, membrane condition, living unit.
What we work on
- Name the edge: where does this Identity end, and who decides what crosses?
- Separate known from addressable: discovery in a Space is not the same as Surface reachability. Visibility caps are part of membrane work.
- Prefer selective permeability over total walls: Interaction must remain possible or the form cannot metabolize reality.
- Maintain the membrane: Boundary is continuous work (policy, consent, attention), not a one-time declaration.
- Do not confuse Boundary with Stem: protecting the edge is not the same as living the full trajectory.
- Hold Space and Boundary together: freedom without membrane dissolves; membrane without freedom freezes the form.
- Nest, do not duplicate: collective outer membrane is Boundary of the collective Identity; member Boundaries remain under Multicellularity.
