Space

Configuration space of the identity: the relational arena of degrees of freedom, before Time draws the Stem.

Status: Working definition. Space is the proposed foundational layer of the framework, framed by analogy with the physical concept of configuration space. Dimensionality and metric remain open work (Critical Gap #44). Physics supplies structural analogies, not settled identity laws.One Space: IE OS installs and runs this same Space; open formal questions describe incomplete measurement of it, not a second ontology.
Physics first

Configuration space

In classical mechanics the configuration space of a system is the space of its possible instantaneous configurations (see configuration space in physics). Its dimension equals the number of degrees of freedom. Constraints reduce the accessible region; forces and dynamics determine which configurations remain reachable from a given state.

Identity Engineering adopts this structure by analogy. The configuration space of an identity is the relational arena of its degrees of freedom: relative positions, bindings, access and jurisdiction profiles. In the relational tradition (Leibniz), space is not a container and not a substance. It is the system of relations, above all relative distances, that can hold between entities.

With this arena the first freedoms appear: freedom with respect to position and relative distance. Constraints and forces later reduce those freedoms and produce bound states. The freedom itself is born with the configuration space.

Reachable region

What remains open under dynamics

In physics and control theory the reachable set is the set of configurations that can actually be reached from a given state under the available dynamics and controls. Earlier drafts of this framework used the phrase "Possibility Space" for a closely related idea.

We now treat that idea as the reachable region of the identity's configuration space under the current Stem, Mass, constraints and Vision Gradient. No second geometric object is required. The arena is the configuration space; the open options are the reachable region inside it.

This is why Space sits before Time in the proposed hierarchy. At a single moment the Identity Stem is not yet a line. It is an arrangement of bound degrees of freedom. Only motion through succession turns those configurations into worldlines, and the bundle of worldlines into the Stem.

Hierarchy

Space → Particles → Time → Mass

  1. Space: configuration space; birth of degrees of freedom.
  2. Particles: bound configurations under Strong Binding and Charge (see Particles of Identity).
  3. Time: motion of bound configurations; each traces a worldline; the bundle is the Identity Stem.
  4. Mass: densification of stake around the already moving Stem.

This order is a pedagogical and engineering order of primitives. It is not a denial of spacetime physics. See also the open anchor work on Einstein / spacetime (Gap #49).

Operationalization

One Space in IE OS

There are not two Spaces. Physics describes the degrees of freedom of the arena. Biology describes the Boundary of the same living form (membrane, selective exchange).Identity Engineering OSinstalls and runs that Space: a Space hosts Identities with concrete freedom profiles, membership, Surface, and membrane policy.

Natural science works the same way. Mechanics and membrane biology cut different aspects of one nature; they do not invent two natures. Framework lenses cut different aspects of one Identity Space; OS is where those aspects become operable together.

  • Physics lens: Space as configuration of degrees of freedom (this page).
  • Biology lens: Boundary as membrane of the form (Boundary).
  • OS: Space as installable host of Identities; Registry stays observer-relative inside each Identity (space-model.md,account-identity-model.md).

Open metric and probe work (#44, #47) still matters. Incomplete formal description does not split Space into a "framework object" and a separate "OS object".

Engineering

What we work on

  • Degrees of freedom: which relative positions and distances are still free, and which are already constrained.
  • Relational arena: identity aspects exist in relation, not in an empty absolute container.
  • Binding readiness: configuration space is the condition for Particles. Without relative position, Strong Binding and Charge have nothing to act on.
  • Ownership link: Ownership as relative Access and Jurisdiction is a profile of degrees of freedom with respect to a configuration. Configuration space is the geometric base of that profile.
  • Reachable region: which part of the configuration space remains open under current Stem, Mass, constraints and Vision Gradient.
  • Installable Space: OS Space host, membership, and membrane policy as the operational face of this arena (see Operationalization above).

Configuration space alone does not define identity. It is the arena. Particles bind inside it. Time draws the Stem. Mass densifies stake around that motion. Curvature then warps the effective geometry of the reachable region: what looks near or far, costly or cheap.
