Recognition
How a living unit classifies what arrives at its boundary: self or other, admissible or rejected, signal or noise.
Status: Working concept under the biology lens. Primary science reading: receptor specificity and self/non-self discrimination (cell communication; immunology only as careful analogy). Analogy, not isomorphism. FollowsSignal; precedes Coupling.
Not every arrival is allowed to act.
In biology, a signal at the membrane is not automatically effective.Recognition is the discriminatory work: receptors bind specific ligands, patterns are matched, self and non-self are sorted, and only some contacts trigger downstream change.
In Identity Engineering, Recognition names that role under the biology lens. After aSignalevent, the receivingCellmust classify: admit, reject, quarantine, or partially apply. This isBoundarypolicy under interactive load — not the membrane as structure alone, but the discrimination that uses it.
Operationally this sits next to consent, foreign-estimate zone, and observational membrane policy in the OS: what may land, what is only observed, what is refused without rewriting the Stem.
- Classification at the edge: self / other, trusted / unknown, signal / noise.
- Admission logic: what may enter metabolism and what must stay outside or only be logged.
- Interactive face of Boundary: Boundary is the membrane condition; Recognition is how that membrane treats a concrete Signal from another unit.
- Prerequisite of healthy Coupling: sustained links without recognition become fusion or invasion, not relation.
- Not the Signal itself.Signal is the event. Recognition is the receiver's discriminatory response to that event.
- Not Coupling.Recognizing and admitting a signal does not yet create a sustained structural bond.
- Not full immunology as Core Concept.Self/non-self is a useful biological reading. We do not import immune-system modules or pathogen metaphysics into the framework kernel.
- Not Ownership of the other.Recognition governs your membrane, not the other Identity's Stem.
- Not automatic moral judgment.Admit/reject is operational discrimination for form integrity, not a complete ethics.

Recognition answers: who or what may act on this Cell?Coupling will answer: what lasting relation forms when exchange continues under recognition?
What we work on
- Make admission criteria explicit: what is auto-applied, what needs consent, what is refused?
- Prefer selective permeability over paranoia or total openness: both extremes kill metabolism.
- Log recognition outcomes without rewriting Stem by default: observation first; Ownership moves are separate.
- Do not confuse recognition with relationship: admission is not Coupling.
Primary discipline: receptor-mediated recognition / cell–cell discrimination. Immunology supplies useful self/non-self language; it is not imported as a full subsystem. Coupling completes the Interactive scale next.
