Metabolism
The continuous process of the Cell: transforming input into the maintenance of the form, the capacity to change, and the readiness to exchange with other living units.
How the unit keeps living.
In biology, metabolism is the set of transformations by which a living unit takes in material and energy, rebuilds and maintains itself, and releases waste or signals into its environment. It is not a separate organism. It is the process of the cell.
In Identity Engineering, Metabolism names that process under the biology lens. After the Cell exists as a founded, bounded unit, Metabolism is how that unitstays alive in time: converting Interaction and input into continued form, updated geometry, and the capacity to meet other cells without dissolving.
Operationally this is close to Probes-as-Bridge and Geometry Receipt: Interaction enters under Boundary policy; the form transforms it into relative geometry; the living unit continues. Metabolism is the biology-lens name for that ongoing conversion.
- Process of the Cell: not a fourth free-floating substance, but what the living unit does continuously.
- Maintenance under change: rebuild the form without erasing recognizability (continuity of Stem under update).
- Conversion of input into form-energy: experience, signal, resource, and constraint become structure, Mass, and option space when metabolized well.
- Bridge toward interaction: metabolism prepares export and import across the membrane. Without it, Boundary becomes a sealed tomb; with it, Signal and Coupling become possible.
- Not the Cell.Cell is the living unit. Metabolism is its ongoing process. See Cell.
- Not Boundary.Boundary decides what may cross. Metabolism transforms what has been admitted and prepares what may leave.
- Not Gene.Gene founds. Metabolism runs after founding, inside the living unit.
- Not pure busyness.Activity without conversion into maintained form is leakage, not metabolism.
- Not a claim of biochemical identity laws.Cellular metabolism is the science reading. The framework maps structure: continuous transformation that sustains a bounded form under Interaction.
Gene → Boundary → Cell → Metabolism
- Gene — founding core that can be passed.
- Boundary — membrane that makes a distinct interior possible.
- Cell — the living unit that is that founded, bounded form.
- Metabolism — the process by which the Cell sustains itself, transforms reality, and opens toward other cells.
With Metabolism, Single-scale biology-lens foundations are complete enough to move towardInteractive concepts: Signal, Recognition, Coupling.
What we work on
- Convert, do not only consume: does Interaction become geometry and continuity, or only noise and exhaustion?
- Keep Boundary and Metabolism paired: open enough to feed the process, closed enough to remain a form.
- Prefer living throughput over static purity: a sealed Identity cannot metabolize reality.
- Use receipts as metabolic traces: in the OS, Geometry Receipts are local products of this conversion path.
Primary discipline: cellular metabolism / biochemistry(transformation networks that maintain the living unit under flux). Single-scale biology lens for this PR set ends here. Interactive scale (Signal, Recognition, Coupling) is next when we continue.
